How to Name the Change You Want

Have you ever felt that stirring inside—the one that tells you a change is coming?

Maybe it whispers through your restlessness or bursts through in a moment of inspiration.

Whether it’s a new career, a lifestyle pivot, or a reinvention of how you show up in the world, big change often begins with a simple truth: we must name it before we can claim it.

Naming your next bold move isn’t just about words—it’s about clarity, commitment, and calling your vision into form. Here’s how to begin.

Step 1. Look Back to Move Forward

Before you leap ahead, take a look behind you. What have been your major life shifts so far? Where have you demonstrated the confidence to make those moves? What decisions shaped the person you are today?

Identify the moments when you changed paths, took risks, or learned something big. This historical lens reveals what motivated you, how these moves aligned with your values and goals, how you demonstrated your courage—this helps you trust your next move.

Spend a few minutes to reflect.

“What were the moments when I truly listened to myself?”

Step 2. Define What’s Calling You Now

Change often arises from discomfort—but also from desire. What feels misaligned in your life right now? What’s tugging at your heart for more?

The shift you’re seeking already has a voice—it’s just waiting for you to listen.

Try This:
In a journal, or on a piece of paper, make two columns.  Jot down what you don’t want anymore, what you’re tired of, what you feel is dragging you down in one column. Then write the opposite in the other column. That’s often where your true desire lives.

Step 3. Tap Into the Emotion Behind the Shift

Behind every move is a feeling—freedom, peace, joy, empowerment. Naming your change starts with identifying the emotional state you want to live in.

Ask yourself:

“What do I want to feel more of in my life?”  Is it joy, purpose, balance, fulfillment?

This emotional compass will point you toward meaningful, not just performative, change.

Step 4. Give It a Name

Now comes the magic: give your change a name. This could be a simple phrase—“My Great Reset,” “Project Reinvention,” or even just “More Joy.” Naming your move helps ground it. It makes it real.

Make it Personal. Make it Powerful. Make it Yours.

Step 5. Declare It

When you share your bold move out loud, you breathe life into it.

Put it on your wall. Stick it on the fridge. Post it on your computer. Confidence comes from clarity—and clarity grows in connection.

You don’t have to know every step yet – you just have to name the first one.
